I was already in unit by then, I think April 2010. I ORD-ed in June 2010.
Declaring is a bloody waste of time. Really. There is absolutely zero reason to declare unless you are in a extremely distressing situation because of your sexuality. I'd imagine many would declare simply because they want to down PES.
Declaring early would only deny you of the experience and possibilities of making full use of your time in the military. Countless queens, femmes, typical gayboys have gone through the army and have excelled in it.
I only regret it because I could have done better, focused on the Army rather than be distracted with something else outside.
Last I heard, anyway, they've reworked how they go about post-declaring, and it seems like even if you have declared, you can still be sent to combat units. So no longer is it a way for a cheap cop-out.

Yes. And I stayed in my unit. They just shoved me out of the sun. Eventually before I left they posted me to be a storeman in the same unit but that was on the final last week.
