Sometimes it's easier when he's the one who has broken the trust. There's then a seemingly logical, safe, reason you can tell yourself to feel better. That it 'isn't your fault'.
You know what, I have no solutions. It's a mess. Get off his laptop - that's a breech of trust and invasion of privacy. That's dishonest. That's the least you can do.
